Tonui is a hardworking farmer from Litein town in Rift Valley, Kenya. He is 30 years old and married with two children, ages 2½ and 6. His eldest child is attending school. Tonui has been farming for the last three years and has employed one farmhand. His main products are milk and tea, which he sells to the local market. He also operates a retail shop in the same area. He has requested this loan from Juhudi Kilimo of 50,000 Kenyan Shillings to purchase a dairy cow. The extra income from the sale of milk will help him educate his children and take them to a better school. He faces, however, the challenge of a lack of artificial-insemination services, which leads to less improved breeds. In five years time, he hopes to have increased his farm. He also hopes that Juhudi will make bigger loans available in the future.
