Antonietta Macayan had always dreamed of seeing her two children, now 22 and 31, graduate. However, she did not have enough income to support their education so they only reached high school and have been unemployed until now. This is because educational attainment is one of the major requirements for gaining employment. Antonietta thinks that, due to poverty, they have fewer opportunities than the wealthy. If only she and her husband, who is a small-time farm laborer, happened to have a lot of money, her dream for her children could have been reached.
Despite what has happened, Antonietta doesn’t like to keep herself in a shell of regret. She wants to be enlightened and find a way to improve her family's standard of living. For this reason, she joined Kiva partner, ASHI, and felt very happy to be given the opportunity of a loan. The first few loans she received enabled her to support her husband’s rice farming and cattle-fattening businesses. The profits from these businesses has been the main source of family income. Now Antonietta has access to capital, her profits are better than before. Therefore, she is now requesting another ASHI loan through Kiva for a much larger amount. This will enable her to grow their business further so that their children at least have their own income by working in their own business.
