The Benkan group is made up of ten women, of which two are widowed and the others married, for the most part belonging to traditional extended families, and are on average 36 years old with four children. They live in Téssérèla, the head village of a rural community in the Barouéli prefecture (4th administrative region of Mali). The group’s main activity is retail commerce of various items such as grain cereals, food condiments, soap, etc. Wanting to increase their working capital, they decided to work with the Soro Yiriwaso MFI. They are requesting a first group loan, which will be used to buy: two bags of rice, 10 bags of millet, five bags of sorgho, three bags of beans, 10 bags of unshelled peanuts, condiments (two bags of dried gombo, three baskets of fresh tomatoes, two bags of fresh onions), two bags of local laundry and dishwashing detergent, including one bag of « Gabacourouni » soap. They get their supplies from Segou, locally in Téssérèla and neighboring villages, and from the weekly N’Gassola market fair. They retail their products from their homes, at the weekly market fairs in N’Gassola and Téssérèla, for cash or credit, to a customer base of both men and women. They hope to attain average monthly earnings of 22,050 FCFA each, part of which will be used to reimburse the Soro Yiriwaso loan, and contribute towards the children’s healthcare and tuition costs.
